Pronounced in the Shanghainese dialect of Wu Chinese, it is called “zi-ga-wei”. During the 18th century it was known by Shanghai’s western residents as “Ziccawei” or “Siccawei” (English) or “Zikawei” or “Zi-ka-wei” (French).
